| We decided immediately that although the shortest and probably the quickest way was to take I-80 all the way into Chicago, I had already gone that route once (see the bicycle tour) and it was the most boring and personality free stretch of highway bar none. So we aimed our non-existent hood ornament to the road less traveled and decided not to take any roads larger than 2 lane unless really necessary. Day one was fraught with adventure as all Volkswagen travels usually are, we headed across the Half Moon Bridge and then made a straight shot across California towards Yosemite National Park. The trip to the park was fairly routine and quite honestly I don’t remember any of it, of course I could say we met some mysterious hippie chicks and had a psycadelic ride but that stretches exaggeration a little far and borders on lying. |

| I’ll just pick it up at Yosemite. If memory serves, we arrived at the gates around 1 pm and spent some time deciding whether it was worth taking the lower loop road on which most of the spectacles are or to just cut through on the upper road and get on into Utah. After consulting the guidebook and a guide herself we discovered that the falls were dry and although the lower road was fantastic, the upper really was pretty darn cool as well. |
