I spent a little while getting to NY stopping by my friends Charlie and Des Morrison at the Fowler Center, a summer camp for people with special needs in Michigan for a visit and then crossed into Canada for a couple of days before re-crossing at Niagara and then driving, with the aid of a laptop and some mapping software purchased cheap in Canada, cross country on small back roads all the way into Hunter NY where my Grandmother lived. (Over the bridge and through the woods on the way to grandmother’s house we go)

The visit with Grandma was, as always, great and an awesome break from the daily grind. I’ll write more about her at some point. I then stayed for a couple of weeks at Woodcrest for two weeks, working and catching up with my friends there before taking off for Kentucky.

I didn’t know that I was going to Kentucky but after 15 hours of driving I found myself back in Harlan stepping, stiff-legged out in front of the brother’s apartment. I had had the decency to let him know that I’d be stopping by and he was out to welcome me sans a welcome plate which was an unfortunate but forgivable oversight of his.

We set up the apartment to house two and then began at first light, to search for employment. By the end of the week we were working side by side at the local Ford Dealership much to the chagrin of our newly upset coworkers. Most of the following days were spent doing things with company or customer cars that we would never think of doing with vehicles of our own. Oftentimes a fifteen minute task turned into an all day diagnose, fix, test-drive, diagnose new (i.e. just created, wasn’t there before test drive, oopsie) problem and then start the process all over again.

This was fun and although our bosses never could agree with us, we were having a good time. Evenings were spent trying to broaden the minds of locals by running wild in diapers, cooking and giving away free food. We also discussed at some length about doing a road trip down to South America and that’s still a dream currently sitting in mothballs.
